Producers Guild Nominations

Remember last year when the Producers Guild gave us a couple of surprise and fun nominees in District 9 and Star Trek with the former actually using this en route to a shock Best Picture nomination? Yeah, nothing exciting like that happened this morning when the guild announced its top ten movies of the year. Basically, it's the same old, same old...

Producer of the Year Award in Films
  • 127 Hours
  • Black Swan
  • Inception
  • The Fighter
  • The Kids Are All Right
  • The King's Speech
  • The Social Network
  • The Town
  • Toy Story 3
  • True Grit

The only vaguely surprising thing about the list is the exclusion of Winter's Bone which is in that precarious assumed last two spots being fought over by it and two other films, 127 Hours and The Town. Whatever happens, 10 of these 11 films will be your 10 Best Picture nominees unless something crazy happens, which is highly unlikely at this point unless, pardon the pun, something blind sides all of us. Another Year? Rabbit Hole? Blue Valentine? Yeah, probably not, but damn how predictable it has all become! I suppose I should just be grateful I don't outright hate any of these films.

Producer of the Year Award in Animated Films
  • Despicable Me
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • Toy Story 3

I guess they follow the same quantity rule as the Academy since last year they had five nominees. Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon have always been locked and loaded, but interesting that Despicable Me managed to jump ahead of Tangled and The Illusionist. The only for-sure thing at the Oscars though is that Pixar is in. The other three are fighting for those last two spots.

Producer of the Year Award in Documentaries
  • Client 9
  • Earth Made of Glass
  • Inside Job
  • Smash His Camera
  • The Tillman Story
  • Waiting for 'Superman'

Don't really have much to say except to note the absence of the wonderfully crafted Exit Through the Gift Shop which is getting the bulk of critical love amongst the rest of its peers this season. I'm going to just think it wasn't eligible or something crazy like that.

I'd list their picks for TV, but it's so ridiculously behind-the-times, I won't even bother.
