Writers Guild Nominations

Right on the heels of the Producers Guild, the Writers Guild of America also announced their nominations earlier today. Some of the usual suspects were missing due to some ineligibility issues, but the assumed front-runners in both categories, The Social Network and Inception, are both still accounted for.

Adapted Screenplay
  • 127 Hours
  • I Love You Phillip Morris
  • The Social Network
  • The Town
  • True Grit

Original Screenplay
  • Black Swan
  • The Fighter
  • Inception
  • The Kids Are All Right
  • Please Give

Documentary Screenplay
  • Enemies of the People
  • Freedom Riders
  • Gasland
  • Inside Job
  • The Two Escobars
  • Who Is Harry Nilsson?

The two films that benefited from the narrower field of competition were Please Give and I Love You Phillip Morris, both definitely coming from nowhere. With that said, all of these nominees will definitely not repeat at the Oscars.

For Adapted, Winter's Bone and Toy Story 3 should replace Phillip Morris and The Town (or 127 Hours). For Original, Please Give will be replaced by The King's Speech. Other ineligible films that might get in, but probably won't include The Ghost Writer, Blue Valentine, Never Let Me Go, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Okay, that latter film is most likely a pipe dream, but I really need to feel like this awards season isn't already a done deal, okay?
