BAFTA Nominations

We still have more than a month to go until The Social Network cleans up at the Academy Awards. The critics and the Hollywood Foreign Press have had their say and now it's the Brits' turn. As expected The King's Speech leads with 14 nominations while the aforementioned Network only got 6 nominations. Is this a sign of a mini-backlash to the film that's been winning everything? I sincerely doubt it. But neither here nor there, on to the nominations...

Best Film
  • Black Swan
  • Inception
  • The King’s Speech
  • The Social Network
  • True Grit

Best British Film
  • Another Year
  • Four Lions
  • The King’s Speech
  • Made In Dagenham
  • 127 Hours

Not surprisingly, The King Speech is nominated in both categories and should make the Oscar Ten along with the four other films nominated in Best Film. 127 Hours is probably the only other "British" film to make the Oscar shortlist. The snubs of The Fighter, The Town, and Winter's Bone shouldn't cause too much worry as they were probably too American. With that said, great showing for True Grit to make it here.

Best Director
  • Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
  • Christopher Nolan, Inception
  • Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech
  • Danny Boyle, 127 Hours
  • David Fincher, The Social Network

Four of these directors match up with four films nominated for Best Film. These same four directors have also been nominated by the DGA so I'm going to go out on a limb and say they're set for Oscars. BAFTA nominee Boyle is fighting with DGA nominee David O. Russell and BFCA nominees Joel and Ethan Coen for that fifth spot.

Best Actor
  • Javier Bardem, Biutiful
  • Jeff Bridges, True Grit
  • Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
  • Colin Firth, The King’s Speech
  • James Franco, 127 Hours

Best Actress
  • Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
  • Julianne Moore, The Kids Are All Right
  • Natalie Portman, Black Swan
  • Noomi Rapace, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  • Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit

Best Supporting Actor
  • Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
  • Christian Bale, The Fighter
  • Pete Postlethwaite, The Town
  • Geoffrey Rush, The King’s Speech
  • Mark Ruffalo, The Kids Are All Right

Best Supporting Actress
  • Amy Adams, The Fighter
  • Barbara Hershey, Black Swan
  • Helena Bonham Carter, The King’s Speech
  • Lesley Manville, Another Year
  • Miranda Richardson, Made In Dagenham

The only real notable snub in these acting categories is BFCA and Golden Globe winner Melissa Leo for supporting. It's especially noteworthy since they nominated her co-stars. With her absense and Steinfeld's promotion to lead, this category is wide open. The other categories should go to the front-runners though (Firth, Portman, and Bale).

Best Adapted Screenplay
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  • 127 Hours
  • The Social Network
  • Toy Story 3
  • True Grit

Best Original Screenplay
  • Black Swan
  • The Fighter
  • Inception
  • The Kids Are All Right
  • The King’s Speech

No big shockers here. Most likely this will be your Oscar list minus The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The Town or Winter's Bone should take its spot.

Best Foreign Language Film
  • Biutiful
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  • I Am Love
  • Of Gods and Men
  • The Secret In Their Eyes

Best Animated Film
  • Despicable Me
  • How To Train Your Dragon
  • Toy Story 3

Despicable Me, huh? Looks like this is seriously threatening The Illusionist and Tangled for that third spot. I saw it and I liked it, but I don't get this. Wonder if the Dragon will win over Toy Story 3. I sort of have a feeling?
Best Cinematography
  • Black Swan
  • Inception
  • The King’s Speech
  • 127 Hours
  • True Grit

Best Production Design
  • Alice In Wonderland
  • Black Swan
  • Inception
  • The King’s Speech
  • True Grit

Best Costume Design
  • Alice In Wonderland
  • Black Swan
  • The King’s Speech
  • Made In Dagenham
  • True Grit

Best Editing
  • Black Swan
  • Inception
  • The King’s Speech
  • 127 Hours
  • The Social Network

Best Make Up & Hair
  • Alice In Wonderland
  • Black Swan
  • Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1
  • The King’s Speech
  • Made In Dagenham

Best Original Music
  • Alice In Wonderland
  • How To Train Your Dragon
  • Inception
  • The King’s Speech
  • 127 Hours

Best Sound
  • Black Swan
  • Inception
  • The King’s Speech
  • 127 Hours
  • True Grit

Best Special Visual Effects
  • Alice In Wonderland
  • Black Swan
  • Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1
  • Inception
  • Toy Story 3

For the most part the same films are being nominated. Nice showing for True Grit, 127 Hours, Inception, Black Swan, The King's Speech, etc.

Rising Star Award
  • Gemma Arterton
  • Andrew Garfield
  • Tom Hardy
  • Aaron Johnson
  • Emma Stone

Carl Foreman Award (best debut by a British writer, director or producer)
  • Clio Barnard, The Arbor
  • Banksy and Jaime D’Cruz, Exit Through the Gift Shop
  • Chris Morris, Four Lions
  • Gareth Edwards, Monsters
  • Nick Whitfield, Skeletons

I totally love that Banksy is nominated. Can he please show up? As for the Rising Star Award, loving the nominations even if I haven't been such a fan of Aaron Johnson or Gemma Arterton in the films I saw of them this past year. But the other three would totally my picks. Just fyi, Jesse Eisenberg was nomination last year.
