Monday TV Report: Laughs, Tears, & Doppelgangers

How I Met Your Mother - Before it went on its brief holiday hiatus, I praised their last new episode declaring it a "season-best." Not sure about that now since last night's episode was one for the ages. The episode contained so many elements that I was shocked how successfully it ultimate was balancing it all. We had Sandy's return, a montage of Robin's most embarrassing moments, Marshall's parent's visit, Barney's doppelganger, and a countdown. That latter, I admit, could've been distracting to many if they felt the need to find each instance. Thankfully, I was a bit oblivious to them until I saw the episode the second time. But all of that muchness led to one of the most poignant moments in the show's history aka Marshall and Lily crying and hugging after Marshall learns that his father died of a heart attack. To say I didn't cry would be a lie. The moment was handled perfectly by Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel and now it's up to the show to build on this Very Serious Thing they've now introduced in their usually happy-go-lucky sitcom. Looking forward to it.

Castle - Who else was surprised how Laura Prepon got on with the cast? Her character, the sex bomb actress hired to play Nikki Heat, could've really been a throwaway or worst, immensely annoying. Thankfully the character was neither and in fact really impressed with her wit, poise, dedication, and sense of humor. Her scenes with either Castle or Beckett were priceless and it was nice to see Stana Katic let loose a little bit in this episode reacting to her doppelganger. The episode ended with a nice moment with Ryan proposing to little-seen girlfriend in front of the whole squad. Less random if it weren't for the moment at the beginning when Castle "proposed" to Beckett. Fine, tease us.

  1. Ahhh both shows were amazing last night. Although I must say, I was pretty ticked off that they decided to throw in such terrible news for Marshall. I was enjoying that episode so much and then the next thing I know, I'm crying like a baby. Why??? I just really hope they make this a crucial part of the character development because at this point I just don't get why they had to do it (other than to just make us all sad).

Castle was great, too. There were so many scenes where Nickolas and I just turned to each other and said something to the effect of "oh, Castle..." or "*sigh* I love them..." haha. VERY good episodes from two of my fave shows :)
