If you've been following the awards season at all this year, you know that there are about 11 or so films vying for those ten Best Picture spots at the Academy Awards. Well the Directors Guild just made the wait for five films that much easier nominating their directors and unofficially becoming the five front-runners to claim the ultimate prize next month.
The DGA nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film for 2010 are:
- David Fincher, The Social Network
- Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech
- Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
- David O. Russell, The Fighter
- Christopher Nolan, Inception
It's worth noting that for the last 10 years, only twice has the DGA matched with the Oscar nominations for Best Director. Fincher is safe and most likely Nolan as well, but the rest, while totally deserving of a nomination, aren't locks. Watch out for previous winners Danny Boyle or the Coen Brothers to fight for that fifth spot. And a year after the DGA and the Academy first rewarded a female director, don't forget about Debra Granik or Lisa Cholodenko, though it's even more of an uphill climb it seems this year. Finally, why not throw Roman Polanski's name as well to play possibly spoiler?
As for the men who are nominated, it's actually a pretty great list despite the homogeneity of it all. With only his second nomination, Fincher is the clear favorite here and at the Academy Awards. This is Nolan's third nomination though his first two nominations didn't translate for Oscars. Finally, this is the first nominations for Aronofsky, Hooper, and Russell. No matter who wins, we'll have a first-time winner!
I'd like to see Nolan walk home with the award. This guy has done so many great things in the past and Inception certainly is a force to be reckoned with. I love King's Speech but I'd rather see Colin Firth win in the acting front than Hooper as director.
