TV Meme: Day 10

"30 Days TV Meme"

Day 10 | A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving

Last year, before the fall TV season began, I told myself that I was NOT going to check out any new shows that took place in "a hospital, a court room, or a police station," because to be honest, enough is enough. Of course, there was one show that I was mildly interested that fell under this description, The Good Wife.

Having not seen a single episode, the cast was enough to tempt me away from my stance. It stars the wonderful Julianna Margulies as the jilted wife of a former state's attorney played by Chris Noth. Her husband in jail, she goes back to work as a litigator among all the young associates, most notably her main competitor played by Gilmore Girls' Matt Czuchry. Her bosses are the fantastic Josh Charles and Christine Baranski while relative newcomer Archie Panjabi is a scene-stealer as the firm's in-house investigator. As you can see, the cast is a bit to die for, but I held firm.

And then the reviews from critics came in hyping the show as a must-watch. Sadly, my will is not so strong, and I ended up watching the pilot... and loved it. Yes, the cast is great, but what sets this "lawyer show" apart from others is the focus on the personal life of the main character, Margulies as "the good wife." We immediately empathize with her as she has to juggle her new job (and co-workers), her husband's on-going trial, and her kids. The network apparently originally wanted the show to be "60 percent professional/40 percent personal," but clearly the opposite is true especially in the back half of the season.

Whew! More of that please!

  1. I feel petty saying this, but Marguiles really annoys me so I never watch the show. I mean every time I see her win an award I just get pissed, but you make me interested so I shall attempt it (and I do love Barinski).
