The Writers Guild of America announced their nominations today. James Cameron maintains his stranglehold on the major guilds as his screenplay work on Avatar was nominated to go along with his PGA and DGA nominations. Other Oscar front-runners such as The Hurt Locker, Up in the Air, and Precious were also nominated.
The nominees are...
Original Screenplay
- (500) Days of Summer
- Avatar
- The Hangover
- The Hurt Locker
- A Serious Man
Adapted Screenplay
- Crazy Heart
- Julie & Julia
- Precious
- Star Trek
- Up in the Air
Documentary Screenplay
- Against the Tide
- Capitalism: A Love Story
- The Cove
- Earth Days
- Good Hair
- Soundtrack for a Revolution
It's very important to note that there were many films that were ruled ineligible for contention. Some of these films include Inglourious Basterds, District 9, An Education, Up, Fantastic Mr. Fox, In the Loop, A Single Man, The Road. Don't be surprised to see the first five films mentioned to appear on the Oscar shortlist. What will they replace?
Inglourious Basterds will definitely make it into the Original Screenplay lineup taking out The Hangover. Avatar is probably the weakest out of the others left nominated, but if any movie can take it out, it might be Up.
It's a bit more difficult to tell with the Adapted category. Up in the Air and Precious are safe bets for Oscar nominations. The other three will have to contend with District 9, Fantastic Mr. Fox, An Education, and In the Loop. I believe the first two (D9 and Fox) will be nominated for an Oscar along with Crazy Heart. But who really knows, right?
