Directors Guild Nominations

The Directors Guild have a knack in predicting who will get nominated for Best Director (and Best Picture) at the Oscars. This year with the Best Picture lineup expanded to ten, all of the films directed by the DGA nominees should make it in. This lineup matching 100% with Best Director is another story all together.

The DGA nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film for 2009 are:
  • Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
  • James Cameron, Avatar
  • Lee Daniels, Precious
  • Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
  • Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds
These are the suspected front-runners for the Academy Awards so no big surprises here. Bigelow is the front-runner to win based on the overwhelming critical reception she has received thus far.

It's a diverse list which includes the first black director to be nominated (Daniels) as well as one of the very, very few women ever to be nominated (Bigelow). It's also a list of first-timers as this is the first nomination for Bigelow, Reitman, and Daniels and only the second nomination for Tarantino and Cameron with the latter winning more than a decade ago for a little film called Titanic.

If the Oscars want to change it up a bit, watch out for Clint Eastwood (Invictus), Lone Scherfig (An Education), and Neil Blomkampf (District 9) to possibly replace Daniels.

Thanks for reading. Feel free to drop me a line. Instead of being Anonymous though, pick a name. Any name would do. Thanks again!
