ATP World Tour Finals: Days 3-4

Group A
R. Federer d. A. Murray 3-6 6-3 6-1
J.M. del Potro d. F. Verdasco 6-4 3-6 7-6(1)

Group B
R. Soderling d. N. Djokovic 7-6(5) 6-1
N. Davydenko d. R. Nadal 6-1 7-6(4)

Roger Federer clinches the year-end #1 ranking when he defeated Murray. He is the only the second player to regain his year-end number one ranking, the other one being Ivan Lendl. Federer also joins Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors as players who have ended the year as number one five times.

An inspired Robin Soderling has not lost a single set in this tournament and followed up his win against Nadal with a win against Djokovic. Soderling thus becomes the first man to make it into the semifinals. No matter what happens now, he will move up in the rankings for a personal best.

An unsure Del Potro and a fiery Davydenko kept their chances alive by winning, while Verdasco would need a miracle to move on. Nadal, who was the first player to qualify for this tournament, however, is the first to be eliminated. If Djokovic wins the rest of his matches, he can overtake Nadal for the year-end #2 ranking.
