A Moment Like This

Didn't know about this particular anniversary until Kelly Clarkson tweeted it just a few hours ago. On this day, back in 2002, Clarkson became the very first American Idol champion defeating runner-up Justin Guarini by getting nearly 58% of the vote. This was when the show was just a little fun summer diversion and definitely before the show became the behemoth and cultural icon it is right now. Since then Clarkson has garnered various awards including two Grammy awards, a few number one hits, and millions of albums sold.

Haven't gotten into American Idol as much as I did that first season until the season of Kris Allen-Adam Lambert last year. In both cases, my early pick for the win won despite not being the initial favorites. And with all the changes happening this upcoming year (Simon Cowell leaving, Ryan Seacrest becoming even more of a douche, no one knowing who is judging next year), I doubt there'll be another champion I'll actively root for or actually invest my time in. Oh well.
