Day 31 | Scene that made you stand up and cheer

I came to America when I was eight years old and so it was awhile since I saw my very first movie in American theaters. That movie was 1994 inspirational sports fantasy movie Angels in the Outfield (1994). If you haven't seen the film, it's about a dreadfully awful baseball team (California Angels) getting some divine help from actual angels after a boy (a very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt) prays to them.

It's as saccharine and cheesy as it sounds, but as a 9-year-old it was the best thing ever. The scene I picked for my "stand up and cheer" moment occurs near the end of the movie with the California Angels in the championships. Their aging star pitcher (Tony Danza) needs to throw just one more strike to win, but he is just utterly defeated. The coach (Danny Glover) gives him some encouraging words and Joseph Gordon-Levitt then comes out of the dugout and start flapping his arms, the sign he's used all season to tell them angels were out in the field to help them. Of course this time, there are no angels in the field since they are unable to help during championship games (because cheating is only good sometimes, don't you know?). The whole team then stands up and flaps their arms, then the whole fucking stadium does it, too. At that point, I'd be surprised if the whole theater didn't start flapping their arms. It was honestly a very touching moment.

The pitcher, with renewed confidence, throws a pitch only for the hitter to make contact, but as luck would have it, the pitcher is able to dive and catch the ball for an out to win the whole enchilada! Everyone then starts cheering, jumping, and celebrating! Yes, this scene is like every other last scene of every other sports underdog movie, but again as the first film I saw in movie theaters, it'll always be just a little extra special. Day 30 | Saddest death scene

It's kind of random that the two saddest death scenes I could think of are Hilary Swank-related. There's her grueling death by getting shot and stabbed as Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry and then there's her heartbreaking and quiet death scene being euthanized by her mentor (played by Clint Eastwood) in Million Dollar Baby.

It's pretty difficult to pick one death scene over another because they are so different. The Boys Don't Cry death is the gorier death scene as we see blood splattered on the wall as Brandon is shot through the neck. The whole thing is just super intense. In the end, I'll probably give the edge to Million Dollar Baby, especially with Eastwood's heartfelt and tear-jerking monologue:

All right. I'm gonna disconnect your air machine, then you're gonna go to sleep. Then I'll give you a shot, and you'll... stay asleep. Mo cuishle means "My darling, my blood."

His last line telling her the meaning of the name he has used for her throughout the movie is probably the moment where everyone's hearts should be breaking. I certainly felt that way. Still do.

Day 29 | Movie you have watched more than ten times

This is going to be a quick one since it's Emmy night and all. With that said, the film is Dirty Dancing and the why? I honestly don't know. I remember recording it on VHS from a TV broadcast one year and I just kept rewatching it. I eventually lost the VHS tape recording, maybe because I recorded something over it (how quaint!), but I still found myself watching the film every year during its encore showings on TBS or USA Network or one of those kinds of networks.

Maybe it was the whole "wanting to rebel against one's parents" by doing something you love and if that something is dancing with a hot guy, practicing until both of you work up a sweat in the studio until you have to go to the lake and cool off, then who couldn't relate to THAT? Plus that final scene with the last performance, that iconic lift, and everyone dancing and having fun just leaves you with such a great feeling that you'd want to revisit over and over again. Oddly enough, it's probably been about 2-3 years since I saw this film. This must be corrected very soon.

Day 28 | Most over-hyped movie

Almost wanted to skip this one because I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I mean over-hyped according to who? I mean I guess over-hyped according to me, but I tend to have such a laissez-faire reaction to many things, so this was ultimately hard for me to really express.

But then I thought... Star Wars! And not just the new films that were more or less criticized and still made boatloads of money, but the original trilogy as well.

I'm probably the only self-identified geek I know that never really got into Star Wars, even the original trilogy. In fact, I have not seen ANY of the Star Wars films all the way through. I, of course, respect what they did for Hollywood, technology, fandom, and sci-fi genre in general, but unlike many people I don't hold them up in some reverential light. And apart from the main stories and some of the characters, I would most likely fail at even the most basic Star Wars trivia game.

Does this mean I have zero geek cred now? Am I permanently shunned from cons? I still obsess over Doctor Who! Shouldn't that count? I mean it actually debut earlier and has lasted longer! So there.

Day 27 | Best Villain

Many know her as Buffy Summers, the little blonde who fights vampires and saves the world. But Sarah Michelle Gellar's second most popular role is the polar opposite of that heroic character and that role is the deliciously heartless Kathryn Merteuil in Cruel Intentions.

Of course the film is based on the classic novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses which has had many film versions made of it, more notably the wonderful 1998 Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close in the role that Sarah Michelle Gellar is playing a version of in this more modern retelling of the story. Like other versions, Kathryn Merteuil is a master manipulator and will do anything and everything to get what she wants.

Whether she's enticing and teasing her step-brother Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) or making fun of Cecile (Selma Blair) behind her back, or plotting against Annette (Reese Witherspoon), Kathryn does it with such glee that you are almost rooting for her at the same time that you're disgusted with her. Man, now I want SMG to play more villains.

Day 26 | Freakishly weird movie ending

I remember seeing Donnie Darko the first time and just staring at the screen after it ended. For some reason it took me a long time to figure out what "happened" and even then (or now) I'm still going, wait, was that what happened? Of course it wasn't really that "complicated" per se. There's time travel and wormholes involved and the end is just the beginning of the film except the main character (Jake Gyllenhaal) ends up dying.

Maybe the real reason I picked this film, other than because it was just the first "freakishly weird" film I thought of, was because I had always found something off about Gretchen (Jena Malone) waving to Donnie's mom, Rose Darko (Mary McDonnell) in the end there...

Clearly, she's up to no good...

I immediately fabricated this whole other movie where Gretchen controlled time and space and made this happen somehow. Yeah, sometimes I think I'm crazy, too.

Day 24 | Quote you use most often

The meme today is tricky since it specifically asked for movie quotes I use most often and not necessarily my favorite movie quotes, of which there are many. One example of those is the quote from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. But then are there really movie quotes that I actually use in casual conversations?

Sure, of course. The most recent example is probably the use of "lesbian" for "love" as in "I am in lesbian with you" from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I've been using that since I saw the film and until someone finds it offensive (is it really?), I'll continue using it.

I've also used "What's your damage?" which is apparently from the 1989 film Heathers, though I'm sure I picked it up via Cordelia Chase in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I often tell my friends that they're "harshing my mellow" which apparently originated from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which I've never seen. Other sources say it came from Encino Man which I did see, but that would be awfully random if I got it from there. Most likely, like the previous quote, I picked it up from TV.

A similar phrase I find myself saying is "damaging my calm" ala "She is starting to damage my calm" from Serenity. Of course there are the various sayings from that film/TV show such as "Shiny!" and "Gorram!"

Who doesn't find themselves in situations where an ironic "You complete me," a cheesy "You had me at hello" or an enthusiastic "Show me the money!" wouldn't work? Also, who knew Jerry Maguire was so damn quotable?

A few more phrases from films I find myself saying a lot include "Boo, you whore" from Mean Girls, "Why so serious?" from The Dark Knight, and "Fuck yeah!" from Team America. Though that last one is probably less because of the movie and more because I just like to curse. Speaking of, does anyone know if "Bitch, please" is from a movie, because I say that way too much.

Day 23 | Best explosion or action scene

Going to go with Quentin Tarantino here, more specifically, that massive fight scene in Kill Bill: Volume 1 where Uma Thurman maims, kills, and injures a crap-load of bad guys.

It's totally gory and totally ridiculous, but it's still loads of fun to watch. Apparently in the international DVD version of the film, the whole sequence is in color, but I like the original theatrical version where some parts were in black and white. I guess it was probably due to the MPAA being squeamish about all of the blood, but I quite like the contrast of the artsy black and white with the highly comical and violent fight scene happening on screen.

My second choice probably would've been the Battle at Helms Deep from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Luckily, Andrew picked that for his entry. Meanwhile, Bunny picked the nicely choreograph and totally sexy battle in Mr. & Mrs. Smith between Brad and Angelina.

Day 22 | Favorite final scene/line

"Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads."

That's the classic final line from the first Back to the Future film and not only did it serve as the perfect capper to the first film, but it also got everyone excited for the sequel. Then to see the famous Delorean fly into the air, well it was a pretty pitch perfect ending.

For the second film, they actually recreated this scene for the beginning of the movie. And yet that line lost none of its effect. See a clip that put the two scenes side by side:

They knew each other only a handful of days, but their love story is almost as epic as the ship where they first met. When Jack Dawson won tickets to Titanic, he saw a world of opportunity. For Rose Dewitt Bukater, the ship was a prison. It's no wonder that the first time they meet, she was ready to literally jump ship. He talked her out of it, of course, and thus began their love story.

Despite their differences (upper vs. lower class, she's engaged, etc.), they managed to fall in love. Even when faced with imminent death, they held on to one another. She came back for him even though she was already seated in one of the precious few lifeboats. He, on the other hand, froze to death making sure she was afloat and safe.

Rose: I love you, Jack.
Jack: Don't you do that, don't say your good-byes.
Rose: I'm so cold.

While you couldn't get more romantic and devoted than that, I realize I fast forwarded through a lot of their courtship which was chock full of super romantic moments i.e. kissing by the bow of the ship, Rose posing for Jack naked, dancing the night away, steamy car sex, etc. But it's what happened after all of that, after he tragically died in the end, that was really special. He remained in her heart and she even took his name. Rose then was able to escape her prison and lived a new life in America the way he would've wanted her to.

Older Rose: A woman's heart is a deep ocean of secrets. But now you know there was a man named Jack Dawson and that he saved me... in every way that a person can be saved. I don't even have a picture of him. He exists now... only in my memory.

It's a testament to both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, that I was so into their characters' relationship in Titanic that I still think of both of them as Jack and Rose. Consequently, a little bit part of me still wish they would end up being a real life couple. I doubt I'm the only one as crazy as it sounds...

Day 20 | Favorite kiss

This particular kiss comes from Brokeback Mountain and is between Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal). It comes four years after they first meet and spend time together at Brokeback Mountain herding sheep (among other activities) for the summer.

The great longing that must have simmered during that long break is quite evident even before the two men touched lips. When they first hug, the electricity between them is palpable. There's also this wonderful moment just before they kiss when Ennis turns toward his house to make sure his wife Alma (Michelle Williams) is not looking and the only things Jack is paying attention to are Ennis' lips...


Then they kiss. And it's one of those kisses that's no holds barred, passionate, throw you on the wall type of kissing. The excitement of their kiss is compounded by the danger of Alma seeing them, which she does, unseen by the two men...


As the audience digest this very important plot development, the two men wrap up their make-out session grazing their noses at one another and finally pulling away. Whew.

Day 19 - Best movie cast

This is where my, up to this point, unspoken rule of picking a different film for every day of the meme is coming in handy. Since I already talked about some of my all-time favorites films containing some of my all-time favorite casts such as Serenity, Love Actually, Moulin Rouge, Lord of the Rings, and Clue, the pool of movies to choose from gets that much smaller.

And yet when one thinks of best ensembles, one should immediately think of Robert Altman who has given us movies with large casts and made them shine. His last film before his death in 2006, A Prairie Home Companion, put the likes of Meryl Streep with Lindsay Lohan, Woody Harrelson, Lily Tomlin, Maya Rudolph, and Virginia Madsen showing off the director's skill in putting together interesting and effective ensembles.

With that said, I actually picked another Altman film with probably an even better cast than the one I just listed and it's more or less because it's one of my favorite films (and cast) of all-time. Gosford Park came out in 2001 and the cast list is just phenomenal. It would be too much to name them all, but I will point out that the movie had Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Michael Gambon, Ryan Philippe, Emily Watson, Clive Owen, Kelly Macdonald, Tom Hollander, Stephen Frey, Eileen Atkins, Kristin Scott Thomas, and many many more. While Altman was surely adept at directing this massive cast, it was the Academy-winning script by writer Julian Fellowes that really showed off each member of the cast without making the film feel crowded. It's no surprise then that the cast won the Best Ensemble Award at that year's Screen Actors Guild Awards.

As a sidenote, this film was distributed by USA Films which is now known as Focus Features. By the end of this meme, I should really count how many films I mentioned this past month were released by Focus Features.

Day 18 | Favorite title sequence

There were many opening title sequences I could've picked. I watched a ton of them in preparation for this entry and I'll list a few of them after my entry, but my ultimate pick is actually the first film I thought of and in the end it really was a no-brainer for me.

This meme would've felt a bit hollow if I didn't talk about Joss Whedon's Serenity and today is as good as any since the film has a fantastic opening sequence. Granted, I consider it great, in part because I'm a huge Whedon/Firefly fan. Another part is because the opening sequence was structured a bit as a sort of love letter to the ship and its crew with its beautiful continuous long shot of the inside of ship with the audience being introduced to each of the principal cast.

Before I talk about the sequence some more, you must watch it first. Here's the link to a YouTube video of the entire sequence, except it's in French. Better yet, go to this website and scroll down a bit and watch the sequence in Quicktime.

So right off the bat, we are treated to the title which is superimposed to the title ship, which we see for the first time flying (or trying to fly) through space. Both fans and non-fans of the TV show are then treated to breezy introductions of not only the crews' situation (in a old run-down ship in the "raggedy edge" of the universe struggling to find work while making sure not to run into the Alliance), but the various relationships and power struggles as well (Mal as the captain, Zoe/Wash as married, Mal vs. Simon, Simon/River as siblings, etc.).

The humor and witty dialogue, which are staples for Whedon and his various projects, are in full display early on with Wash and Mal reacting to the possible crash of the ship. We are also introduced to the main conflict and drive of the film i.e. River and her history with the Alliance. Again, all of this done in one continuous shot and with the beautiful score playing in the background, and in only about 5 or so minutes. It just makes me want to watch the movie again right now.

Day 17 | Favorite series of related movies

Until Joss Whedon decides to do a sequel to Serenity, I'm going to go with Peter Jackson's epic Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those three films were among my favorite films of the past decade not only because they were so well made and so engrossing, but also because I have attached personal memories to them. For example, I saw all three in theaters with my high school friends and since this played around the holidays we usually saw it during vacation or right after a grueling final. In college, I actually bonded with some of my good friends right now while seeing the final film on DVD.

Okay, so it wasn't a perfect trilogy. Fellowship of the Rings took awhile to get going and Return of the King took awhile to end, but for three years in a row (2001, 2002, and 2003), the Lord of the Rings movie coming out later that year was THE movie to see and they all delivered one after another. For all of its efforts, all three films were rewarded by becoming critical favorites, box office blockbusters, and modern classics. The third film even dominated the Academy Awards for its year winning all of its nominations including Best Picture and Best Director.

And yet like any big epic, it would be nothing but a hollow blown-out CGI-fest without its characters. There's the ring-bearer Frodo Baggins with his trusty and loyal friend Samwise Gangee. There's the stoic Legolas and his great relationship with Gimli as well as the great comic relief provided by Merry and Pippin. There are the tour de force performances from Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, and Andy Serkis as Aragorn, Gandalf, and Gollum respectively. And while screentime could've been better, let's hear it for the superbly talented ladies in the cast like Cate Blanchett, Miranda Otto, and Liv Tyler. As I said, these films are enormous and grand, but in the end it really is all about these people too and their bravery, their loyalty, their will, their passion, and their determination.

Day 16 | Your guilty pleasure movie

It was between Bring It On and Mean Girls, but since Bunny wrote on Mean Girls, I decided to pick the cheertastic Bring It On which coincidentally is celebrating its 10th anniversary in only a few days! Also as a side-note... wow, I feel old. In any case, I'm actually planning a bigger, more extensive post on the movie during its anniversary so this entry is going to be short and sweet.

Saw this on opening weekend mostly due to Eliza Dushku (aka Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer), but it quickly earned "guilty pleasure" status as I found myself quoting the film time and time again. Thankfully, I have friends who totally get it so it's less a "guilty" pleasure for me. The characters are fun, the choreography is amazing, the dialogue is snappy and hilarious...

Torrance: Courtney, this is not a democracy, it's a cheerocracy. I'm sorry, but I'm overruling you.
Courtney: You are being a cheer-tator Torrance and a pain in my ass!

Sparky: I am a choreographer. That's what I do. You are cheerleaders. Cheerleaders are dancers who have gone retarded. What you do is a tiny, pathetic subset of dancing. I will attempt to turn your robotic routines into poetry, written with the human body. Follow me, or perish, sweater monkeys.

Missy: What is your sexuality?
Les: Well, Jan's straight, and I'm... controversial.
Missy: Are you trying to tell me you speak fag?
Les: Oh, fluently.

Sparky: I want you to think of what you ate today. Got it? Now cut that in half, this is called a diet, people, everyone start one today! Darcy, you should stop eating. You see, when you skip a meal, your body feeds off its fat stores. And if you skip enough, maybe your body will eat your ass!

Most of the cheers performed in the film are also all pretty classic, from that bitching opening to the amazing final routines, to all of the U-G-L-Y/Brr it's cold in here cheers in between. Plus, where would pop culture be without the introduction of SPIRIT FINGERS? Let me tell you, nowhere.

Day 15 | Best musical

"The hardest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return."

Well I don't know about "best," but this is definitely one of my favorite musicals ever. Moulin Rouge! is a treat for the eyes and ears as it should be since it's the third film in Baz Luhrmann's lush and captivating Red Curtain Trilogy.

Way before Glee made mash-ups and covering pop songs cool, Moulin Rouge! used those for its electric soundtrack to match its eye-popping and grand visuals. Like Christian to Satine, it really was love at first sight with the film.

Nicole Kidman has never looked as radiant as she did as Satine, the beautiful courtesan that falls in love with Christian, the handsome penniless writer played by Ewan McGregor. This was actually the first film of McGregor I had seen so this would always be the film that I associate with him even with the multitude of characters he has since played. And when both of them are singing? Forget it, I'm gone. As cheesy as The Elephant Love Medley is, it remains breathtaking whenever I listen to it. Don't get me started on "Come What May."

Now if only these two would just reunite for another musical, it would just be the greatest thing ever.

Day 14 | Favorite film in black and white

During senior year of college, I took an Italian Cinema course and while the people in the class and the professor were ultimately useless, it was wonderful being exposed to so many Italian films I wouldn't have seen myself such as 8 1/2, L'Avventura, Mamma Roma, etc. One film that still haunts me is Ladri di Biciclette or The Bicycle Thief*.

This timeless 1948 film is by Vittoria De Sica and is a classic neorealist film. The film revolves around a father who is trying to provide for his family and the only way to do that is by doing a job that requires him to own a bicycle. After his bicycle is stolen, we follow him and his young son around Rome in their desperate search. The plot is relatively simple, but the emotional impact transcends the time and place the movie is set. With the way the economy is right now and many families struggling to make it, this movie is still very much relevant and just as difficult to watch as ever.

*The real translation of the Italian title is Bicycle Thieves and more and more this is being used as the official translated title. But I first saw the film, and thus have grown quite attached, with the incorrect translation so I prefer to still use it. Plus I actually think it's a more effective and elegant title based on what happens in the film.

I know there are more animated films than just those from Disney and Pixar, but really the kid in me was all about Disney and the adult in me has been pretty obsessed with Pixar the past few years.

With that said, it's still pretty damn difficult to pick a favorite, but somehow I managed to rank them before:

As you can see Aladdin and Finding Nemo were my top choices and you know, why not? I guess for Aladdin it was because it was the first Disney film that centered on the guy as opposed to the princess. Plus back then, what boy didn't want a monkey, a magic carpet, and/or a genie? Finding Nemo is the one Pixar film that I've seen more than three times and it's because it's hilarious. Most of that is probably due to Dory who is probably my favorite Pixar character, but neither here nor there.

Day 12 | Best soundtrack/background music in a scene

Well this is kind of impossible. How does one answer this? I think I'm going to stick to non-diegetic music which cuts out most musicals (which is fine since there's a Best Musical day in the meme), but that doesn't make this any easier.

How can I discount the classic theme of such movies such as Jaws, Jurassic Park, Star Trek, and many more? And how about those scores/soundtracks I've recently loved from Inception, Atonement, (500) Days of Summer, Up, Slumdog Millionaire, Brokeback Mountain, Harry Potter, etc.? My heart automatically flutters just a little bit when I hear this. In fact, I have this on my mp3 player and I constantly listen to it. This theme plays throughout this absolutely charming film and works quite well for both the small and big moments.
